Who I am.
My name is Trish Lopez. I'm a working mom who runs a small business and non-profit in New Mexico. My experiences with our adversarial family court system in NM compelled me to take action in hopes of seeing change. Many people support this initiative and have joined together to reclaim our right to an impartial judicial system as there are far too many stories of pain, discrimination, injustice, and for-profit parties who thrive under conflict - that makes our family court system what it currently is: a traumatic experience for many of those involved. We can create lasting, positive change as our individual struggles unite us and make us a force for good. My story starts here. Join us in taking action. |

Your story can be shared here too! Feel free to write about your own experiences in the comments, or simply voice your support for change. This website and initiative is about supporting people who want to create major shifts for ourselves and others who will continue to experience our court systems. Read our successful petition calling on NM leaders to fix the corrupt judicial campaign financing that allows lawyers to bankroll their judges' campaigns, and the result of our legislature passing a bill to approve public financing as of 2023. New Mexico is the FIRST state to pass this legislation for District Court judges - and it's important to understand that this kind of campaigning exists in every state in the country. Everyday people and non-lawyers can address the injustices in our system by influencing our leaders to enact change, by putting people above money and politics, addressing the corruption that is baked into our system. We can hold them accountable if they choose not to follow through. |
What can we do?
Ultimately our entire justice system needs to be reimagined and rebuilt from the ground up. The reality though is that tens of thousands of people go through our courts every day in New Mexico alone, and our system routinely and unjustly hurts vulnerable people who have precious little to give in the way of time, energy and resources. Our courts are vastly overwhelmed, inefficient, inherently biased, and often corrupted by money and personal relationships. These problems are structural and reinforced by politics and policy. Family Court is just one example. To see change sooner than later, we must all learn more and take action. Here's a list of reasonable action steps to start. I encourage you to share your ideas too. Things are already changing for the better and will continue to do so if we all contribute a small amount of time and attention. |
